The Table

Dinner, sorted.

A James Beard kitchen five minutes from the door. Two Michelin stars in Encino. Wine lists that rival rooms twice the price, and the new margarita bar everyone on Ventura is talking about. Here's where we'd actually send you, written by a former professional chef.

Anajak Thai

James Beard 2023LA Times No. 1 · 2022
Sherman Oaks · ~5 min

A 40-plus-year Sherman Oaks institution reborn under second-generation chef Justin Pichetrungsi into one of the most celebrated Thai kitchens in America. His James Beard win (Best Chef: California) and the L.A. Times' Restaurant of the Year nod rest on a soulful à la carte menu and a genuinely world-class wine list. The cult "Thai Taco Tuesdays" draw lines around the block, while the once-a-month omakase is among the hardest reservations in the city.

Daisy

New · Margarita Bar
Sherman Oaks · Ventura Blvd · ~5 min

Daisy brings a modern cantina swagger to Ventura Boulevard, from the team behind Los Feliz's lauded Mírate. Chef Alan Sanz's reimagined Mexican plates and a glittering raw bar — tuna tostadas, ceviche, aguachiles — share the room with Max Reis's serious agave program: inventive margaritas and rare tequilas poured beneath jars of mezcal lining a saloon-length bar. It's the rare neighborhood spot that feels like a night out and a destination at once.

Sushi Note

MICHELIN Guide
Sherman Oaks · ~7 min

Sushi Note pairs chef Kiminobu Saito's precise, cut-to-order nigiri with something most sushi bars overlook: a genuinely serious wine program, including a dedicated five-seat wine bar. The moody, art-hung room and seasonal half- or full-omakase have made it a quiet favorite of Valley connoisseurs. A MICHELIN Guide–listed counter that rewards the wine-curious.

Wood & Water

Sherman Oaks · ~8 min

A modern American bistro with an Italian-leaning, globe-trotting accent, right on the Ventura Boulevard strip. Seasonal ingredients drive the menu while live music on Wednesdays and Fridays gives the room an easy, social energy. Polished and date-night-friendly, it's become one of the dependable anchors of Sherman Oaks dining.

Casa Vega

James Beard America's Classic
Sherman Oaks · Since 1956 · ~8 min

A genuine Los Angeles landmark, Casa Vega has poured strong margaritas in its dim, festive dining room since 1956 — long enough to have served Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, and Jane Fonda. The James Beard Foundation named it an America's Classic in 2022, honoring its role in bringing Mexican food to the Valley. Family-run into its second generation, it's as much a piece of Hollywood lore as it is a restaurant.

Pasta|Bar

★ 1 Michelin Star
Encino · ~10 min

Hidden in an unassuming Encino strip mall, Pasta|Bar delivers a Michelin-starred, multi-course tasting menu from chef Phillip Frankland Lee that pushes Italian tradition somewhere more playful — a single oxtail-braised agnolotti under Comté espuma, sunchoke gnocchi, course after course at an intimate chef's counter. It has held its star every year since 2021. Reservations release on the first of each month and vanish fast.

Shin Sushi

★ 1 Michelin Star
Encino · ~12 min

Shin Sushi is a Michelin-starred Edomae omakase counter run with monastic focus by owner-chef Taketoshi Azumi. A single chef's-choice course — appetizer, miso soup, and fourteen pieces of nigiri — unfolds across just two nightly seatings at an intentionally tiny counter. No walk-ins, reservations by phone only; one of Encino's most coveted seats.

OyBar

Studio City · ~10 min

Chef Jeff Strauss's joyously irreverent love letter to Jewish deli tradition, refracted through Japanese, Mexican, and SoCal influences — and served inside a genuine dive, the historic Oyster House Saloon. Expect wagyu pastrami quesadillas, matzo-ball ramen, smoked-trout tostadas, and a cult burger. Culturally layered cooking with zero pretension and a packed, convivial room.

Shawarma by Avi Cue

Studio City · ~12 min

Born as a pandemic-era pop-up whose drops sold out in minutes, Avi Cue is self-taught chef Aviad Yalin's wagyu-shawarma obsession made permanent. The signature sandwich layers spit-roasted wagyu with tomato, onion, parsley, tahini, and tangy amba; arayes and fries round out a tight, cult-followed menu. The storefront finally lets you just walk in for what people once chased across town.

Sushi Aria

Sherman Oaks · ~5 min

A bright, well-priced neighborhood sushi house on the Ventura corridor, Sushi Aria turns out crisp rolls, sashimi, and Japanese plates with quick, friendly service. It's the everyday counterpoint to the omakase temples nearby — dependable, fresh, and built for an easy weeknight.
